Employment Application Deadline for Students Completing in
December
If you are
completing your program of studies by December 23, 2009 you may be eligible to
apply for F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT) or J-1 Academic Training (AT). The deadline to apply at the OISS is Friday,
December 10.
To view the F1 Post
Completion OPT mandatory workshop, see www.nyu.edu/oiss/documents/PostCompletionWorkshop/index.html.
F-1 students must view the complete on-line OPT workshop and complete
the survey form at the end.
For J-1 Post
Completion AT information, view www.nyu.edu/oiss/legal/employment/j1/j1training.html
Travel Reminder
Be sure to view the
mandatory travel workshop on the OISS website prior to finalizing any travel
plans for the upcoming vacation period.
Students new to NYU this semester must attend. All F-1 and J-1 students should also check
that your passport, visa and I-20 or DS-2019 are valid and have a current OISS
travel signature. For more information,
view www.nyu.edu/oiss/legal/workshops.html
Prepare For Tax Season
If you are an F-1
or J-1 student who worked in 2009, make sure your employer has your updated address
before December end in order to receive important tax information. This is true for NYU on-campus employment as
well. For details, view www.nyu.edu/oiss/legal/taxes/index.html
Registration Reminder
The registration
period for spring 2010 classes has begun. All F-1 and J-1 students are required
to register full-time, which is a minimum of 12 credits per semester for most
NYU programs. For a detailed explanation of this immigration requirement, visit www.nyu.edu/oiss/legal/visa/f1_j1/parttime.html. Make sure you register full time
or have been approved to be registered part time by the OISS by January 29,
2010.
Spring 2009 Plans to Study beyond
the NYC Campus
If you are planning to pursue NYU
study abroad, research abroad, or otherwise not be at the NYC campus this
spring, it’s important to take the following three steps. First, discuss
your plans with your academic advisor. Second, review the OISS guidance
on research and study abroad for F-1 students at www.nyu.edu/oiss/legal/visa/f1_j1/study_abroad.html . Third, meet with an OISS advisor to review
your specific plans, providing the information as outlined in the web guidance.
Change of Program
Students who move from one degree program to another at NYU (such as Associates
to Bachelors or Bachelors to Masters) need to obtain an I-20 for the new
program upon admission. To do so, review the guidance here: www.nyu.edu/oiss/legal/visa/f1_j1/cop.html. This includes LSP (Liberal Studies Program)
students transitioning from Associate to Bachelor level, who should contact jackie.chin@nyu.edu with questions regarding this process.
