Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Why do people keep asking me what school I go to? I tell them NYU over and over.
New York University is the largest private university in the United States. Members of the NYU community identify themselves by their affiliation with one of the schools of the university, such as the Stern School of Business or the Tisch School of the Arts. It is important identifying information because policies, fees, and tuition, among other items vary from school to school.

2. What do I need to open a bank account?
You will need proof of identification and immigration status in the U.S.: your passport, I-94 card, and I-20 or DS-2019. Take your NYU ID card if you have it, as well as any other identity documents issued by your government. Many banks request a social security number, but some do not. A social security number is not required for an F-1 or J-1 student to open a bank account. The bank may also ask for proof of residence. Contact the OISS if you encounter problems in opening an account.

3. How do I find an apartment? Should I use a broker?
Finding an apartment in and around New York City is a challenging rite of passage, but ultimately people end up finding comfortable living arrangements in an array of situations. Using a broker (a real estate agent) to locate an apartment is expensive as there is often a fee that equals at least one month's rent. Generally, it is best to try to find something first through the NYU Off-Campus Housing Office or classified advertisements in newspapers. Read the chapter on housing in this guide and check with the OISS for further resources, such as workshops and publications on how to find housing.
