Subway
The New York City subway system serves 1.2 billion passengers yearly and covers 231 miles of track. The subway operates all day every day in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, although late night and weekend service is reduced. There are 25 subway routes, many of which are express service, which means they skip certain stops. Subway trains run about every two - five minutes during rush hours (6:30 - 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 - 8:00 p.m.), five - twelve minutes during non-rush hours, and every twenty minutes during late night hours. A subway station may house one or many subway trains, usually but not always in both the uptown and downtown directions.

Passengers use pre-paid swipe cards (Metrocard ) to enter the station area. Each one-way subway ride costs $2, and Metrocards can be purchased in any amount. At publication time, unlimited Metrocards are sold as one-day ($7), seven-day ($24) and thirty-day ($76) cards, allowing unlimited travel during that time period. If you will not use the subway often, it is worthwhile to purchase a card in $10 denominations, which allows for one free ride per $10 spent.

Are you unsure which subway to use to reach your destination? You can call the Mass Transit Authority (MTA) at (718) 330-1234, or visit the MTA website, for directions. Subway and bus maps are available at the NYU Information Center, 50 West 4th Street, (212) 998-4636.
