Safety in the City
At NYU
Public Safety is the NYU department responsible for guarding the university's buildings, ensuring that all visitors to campus are here for university business, and assisting the NYU community in emergencies and with other non-emergency safety situations. Many students have found Public Safety officers to be good sources of information about what is happening on campus. They are not New York City police officers but have a working relationship with them. Protection Services is located at 14 University Place, (212) 998-2222, 8-2222 if you are calling from a campus telephone. They are open 24 hours, every day. If you need help on campus, you can always go to the Public Safety Office. You can also go to any NYU building with a green light; these buildings have security officers on duty 24 hours a day. There are also non-NYU buildings that have the green light, indicating they are safe havens for students who need assistance. Most women's bathrooms at NYU have emergency buttons in the bathroom stalls.
In the City
NYU is located in the Sixth Precinct of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The precinct is at 233 West 10th Street; the non-emergency number is (212) 741-4811. If you are ever in an emergency situation, dial 911 from any telephone. The call is always free, even from a payphone. A 911 call should be made with discretion. It is appropriate to call 911 when a crime is in progress, when someone is seriously injured, or when there is a situation involving death or near death. It is important not to use 911 for reporting a crime after the fact, such as an apartment or car break-in. Those events should be reported by using the non-emergency number of the appropriate precinct.
If you live in a neighborhood outside of the NYU area, it is a good idea to locate your local police station (precinct office) and learn their telephone number. If you are considering living in an area, it is useful to ask the local police officers their opinion of the crime rate and to get some safety tips for that particular locale.
