Identity theft

The crime of identity theft has become more widespread in New York City and the United States. Identity theft occurs when a person uses another's name and personal information in order to obtain a credit card, take money from a bank account, or otherwise illegally conduct business. It is impossible to be completely safe from identity theft. However, there are precautions individuals can take to protect themselves from identity theft. Prevention is much easier than trying to undo the repercussions from another person misusing your identity.

It is first important to understand how a thief can attain your personal information. Most commonly, thieves will steal your wallet or purse, or take your incoming mail from your mailbox. Also, criminals may rummage through your trash for bank statements or other financial information. This information can then be used to open a new credit card account, make purchases on a current credit card in your name, or apply for a loan.

There are many things you can do to protect yourself from identity theft. Do not give out personal information without first asking how it will be used and whether it will be supplied to others. Be cautious about giving any information over the telephone. Telemarketing is fast becoming a very popular means of fraud. For instance, if your bank calls to "update" your account information, you should hang up and call the bank yourself and find out if the inquiry is legitimate. Additionally, it is wise to destroy all charge card receipts, banking information, insurance forms, and other personal statements before throwing them away.

If you have been the victim of identity theft you should file a report with your local police department, and be sure to get a copy of the police report for your records. Furthermore, if you notice any discrepancies on you credit card or bank statements, contact your bank or creditor immediately. Victims of identity theft can call the Federal Trade Commission's toll-free hotline at 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338) for information. To learn more about identity theft visit the Federal Trade Commission website at www.ftc.gov.
