Jules A. Martin is vice president Global Security and Crisis Management for the Department of Public Safety at New York University. He joined New York University as an assistant vice president for Protection and Transportation Services in 1997. He manages one of the largest university security forces in the nation, consisting of nearly 350 security employees who provide protection services for over 50,000 students and close to 15,000 employees as well as oversight for NYU study abroad and regional campuses abroad. He is responsible for maintaining a campus that is safe and secure for students to learn, faculty to teach and employees to work without the distraction of safety concerns.
Prior to joining the staff of New York University, Mr. Martin served as Chief of the Housing Bureau for the New York Police Department where he, a 28-year veteran, was responsible for the safety and security of approximately 600,000 residents of public housing in the city's five boroughs. Prior to his appointment as chief of the Housing Bureau, Mr. Martin served as borough commander of Patrol Queens South where he was responsible for the delivery of police services to over one million people who reside within the eight precincts in that borough. Mr. Martin serves as a commissioner on the Civilian Complaint Review Board, a member of the Character and Fitness Committee of the First Judicial Department of the New York State Appellate Division.
Mr. Martin received a B.A. in criminal justice from John Jay College in 1976; a M.A. in public administration from C.W. Post, Long Island University in 1979; and a Juris Doctorate from Brooklyn Law School in 1984. He has been a member of the New York State Bar since 1985 and was admitted to the United States Supreme Court Bar in 1998. He is a 1991 graduate of the Police Management Institute, Columbia University. He served in the United States Navy from March 1965 through March 1969.
He is a member of the International Chiefs of Police, the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the New York State Bar Association and a member of the 1997 White House Fellowship Panel. International Association College Law Enforcement Administrators, American Society of Industrial Security Mr. Martin has served as an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Mr. Martin is married to Ruby Ryles-Martin and currently resides in Bayside, Queens, New York.
