NYU’s Langone Medical Center Creates New Centers of Excellence
The NYU Langone Medical Center recently announced the creation of six new Centers of Excellence, which bring together scientists and clinical researchers to foster highly collaborative, multidisciplinary investigation that inspires new ideas and discoveries in areas long recognized as institutional strengths. The goal of the centers is to translate scientific advances more swiftly into new ways of treating patients and diagnosing and preventing disease. The centers are devoted to areas of study that address some of the most pressing health challenges and will collectively receive $15 million in funding over the next three years.
The centers are the Center of Excellence on Addiction, which will address addictions of all kinds, from dependence on illicit and prescribed drugs, alcohol and tobacco, to behaviors such as gambling, eating disorders, and sexual risk-taking; the Center of Excellence on Brain Aging and Dementia, which will study the fundamental disease processes in animal models and humans, with the goal of developing new diagnostic tools and therapies and to explore new psychosocial interventions for patients and caregivers; the Center of Excellence on Cancers of the Skin, which will use access to the largest dermatology department in the United States and one of the most extensive patient and tissue databases to find new ways to fight skin cancer; the Center of Excellence on Multiple Sclerosis, which will take advantage of NYU’s position as one of the only MS research centers funded by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to push forward advances in search and clinical care; the Center of Excellence on Musculoskeletal Disease, which builds on expertise at the NYU School of Medicine and NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases to focus on arthritis, autoimmunity, and the repair/regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues; and the Center of Excellence on Urologic Disease, which will focus on discovering and implementing innovative treatments for the most prevalent urological disorders, including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, urinary tract infection and kidney stone disease.
