Six Faculty Receive Distinguished Teacher Award

      Six professors were recently presented with NYU’s Distinguished Teaching Award for 2008-09. The honor, which recognizes high quality instruction and commitment to students, comes with a $5,000 grant and a specially designed medal.
       Distinguished Teaching Award winners are selected by members of the NYU community, who submit nominations to representatives from the individual schools. The schools then select names from these lists for submission to a University-wide committee made up of faculty, students, alumni, and administrators who make the final selections.
This year’s distinguished teachers are:
• Joyce Apsel, master teacher in the humanities, Liberal Studies Program, Faculty of Arts and Science;
• John Canemaker, professor of animation, Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, Tisch School of
the Arts;
• Ingrid Gould Ellen, associate professor of policy and urban planning, Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service;
• Jerome Lowenstein, professor of medicine, School of Medicine;
• Andrew Spielman, professor of basic science, College of Dentistry; and
• Tyler Volk, professor of biology and environmental studies, Faculty of Arts and Science.
