Edward Fox Donates $5 Million to Establish the Herman Robert Fox Deanship at College of Dentistry

A $5 million gift from Edward Fox has created the Herman Robert Fox Deanship at the NYU College of Dentistry (NYUCD) in memory of Fox’s father, Herman Robert Fox, who graduated from the college in 1926. It is only the second endowed deanship at a dental school in the United States.
“This magnificent gift comes at a propitious moment, ” said Interim Dean Richard I. Vogel. “In addition to paying tribute to his father’s memory in an especially meaningful way, Mr. Fox’s gift testifies to his confidence in the college’s ability to build on the major accomplishments sustained over the past several years and in the College’s future under the leadership of Charles N. Bertolami, who assumed the Herman Robert Fox Deanship on September 1. This gift accelerates NYUCD’s momentum toward becoming the dental institution with the greatest impact globally on the health of society.”
Edward Fox received an M.B.A. degree from the Stern School of Business. He was formerly dean of the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and chairman of SLM Corp (Sallie Mae), the Student Loan Marketing Association. He currently serves as chairman of the Board of the American Ballet Theatre.
“I have been uniformly impressed with the progress and quality of NYUCD in recent years,” said Fox, “and I’m excited by its prospects for the future. When I made the decision to honor my father’s memory, and spoke to my mother about her wishes, we agreed that it was altogether appropriate that my father’s name be linked with his alma mater. It is our hope that this gift will provide the resources to enable the college in its continuing quest to make NYUCD to become extraordinary.”
