NYU Launches All-University Council For the Study of Disability

What began as a small group of faculty members from four schools to raise awareness about disability issues has expanded into an all-University Council, with seed money from NYU Provost David McLaughlin.

Co-chairing the newly formed Council for the Study of Disability are Faye Ginsberg, professor of anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and Ann Goerdt, clinical assistant professor of physical therapy in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

Over the next two years, the council aims to identify priorities and partnerships for research on issues that address the concerns of people with disabilities, increase the exchange of information to enhance teaching in relevant NYU programs and courses, and increase disability awareness at NYU.

Members of the council will include faculty from nine schools as well as the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities.

The council will also host lunchtime seminars on topics related to disability issues, the next occurring on Nov 1. from 12 to 2:00 p.m. at 19 University Place, Room 222. It will feature new research on disability and sexuality from Don Kulick, professor of anthropology and director of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality, and Randolph Mowry, clinical associate professor of applied psychology at Steinhardt. To reserve a seat, please email Ann Goerdt at ag89@nyu.edu.
