NYU Expands Child Care Initiatives and Opportunities
Responding to the increasing challenges faced by NYU’s working parents, the University’s Child Care Task Force has been busy developing and readying a number of new “family friendly” initiatives for Academic Year 2007-2008.
“Results from our Dependent Care Needs Survey have underlined that the high cost and scarcity of available child care affects many of NYU’s working parents,” says E. Frances White, vice provost for faculty affairs and chair of the Child Care Task Force.
“It has also become clear that responding to the diverse needs of parents on NYU’s campus demands that we build an infrastructure that can support a wide array of child care options. Our early efforts in this child care initiative are designed to build the foundation for programs that meet the short- and long-term needs of NYU families.”
Some new options and opportunities for NYU’s working parents include:
• Pilot child care scholarship program: A pilot child care scholarship program for full-time faculty, researchers, and administrative and professional staff with household incomes of less than $125,000 and with child care expenses for preschool-aged children under the age of five years will be launched this Fall. Applications will be accepted through October 10.
• New Web site: The Family and Community Initiatives has launched a new Web site (www. nyu.edu/family.care) that includes information on a wide range of parenting, child care, and education topics. Later this fall, the site will launch an on-line babysitting registry and a Web-based tool for parents across campus to network with each other on and about parenting and child care issues.
• Parent resource fair: A parent resource fair, scheduled October 24, from 11:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m. on the NYU campus, is designed to provide NYU faculty, staff, and students with information about University-sponsored and local community parenting, and child care resources and programs.
More information will be forthcoming on these and other initiatives in the coming months. If you have any questions or comments about the efforts described above or any other initiatives please contact Joyce Rittenburg, manager, Family and Community Initiatives, Office of Faculty Resources by phone, 212-998-9085 or email, jar9@nyu.edu.
