College of Arts and Science Receives Beckman Award

By James Devitt

NYU’s College of Arts and Science (CAS) is the recipient of a Beckman Scholars Program Award, which provides scholarships for undergraduates to conduct in-depth, faculty-mentored laboratory research in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, and neural science. NYU was one of 13 U.S. institutions selected for the award.

The grant will begin in summer 2006 and continue for three years. During that time, six students will be named as Beckman Scholars, with two awards being given each year. Funding for each includes $19,300 for two summers and one intervening academic year of scientific research. The recipients for summer 2006 will be announced this month.

This is the third time CAS has received a Beckman Scholars Program Award, which was established in 1997 by the California-based Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. Select, accredited universities and four-year colleges in the U.S. are invited to apply for a Beckman Scholars Program Award, which provides scholarships designed to advance the education, research training, and personal development of top quality students in chemistry, biochemistry, and the biological sciences.
