NYU’s Pipes and Drums Band Offers A Little Bit of Scotland in New York City
The NYU Pipes and Drums, which leads today’s Commencement procession, performs throughout the city at venues including Avery Fisher Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and Madison Square Garden. Participation in the group is part of the Bagpipe Band ensemble course at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, which offers instruction on the Scottish Highland bagpipes, Scottish snare drum, tenor drum, and bass drum.
The course instructors, Pipe Major Brian Meagher and Drum Sergeant Michael Eagle, are professional musicians in the Scottish idiom and lead one of the few pipe bands facilitated through an American university. Pictured above is the band at last year’s Commencement ceremony in the old Yankee Stadium. For more information, visit the Pipes and Drums’s Web site at http://homepages.nyu.edu/~jh15/nyupipes/.
