NYU Students Honored with Nation’s Top Scholarships and Fellowships
Each year, NYU students receive some of the most distinguished scholarships and fellowships in the nation. While many students are still waiting to hear from ongoing competitions, the following is a list (as of May 6) of awards won so far this academic year.
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Physics major Jesse Amato-Grill (CAS ’10) received a Goldwater scholarship, which provides up to $7,500 per remaining undergraduate year for students who plan research careers in the sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
Fulbright Grant
From the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, the winners were Matthew Dell, who will study in Mali, Neil Gong (Hong Kong), and Agam Neiman (Austria). From the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the winners were Alison Cool (Sweden), Jesse Margolis (Brazil), Matthew Spigelman (Cyprus), Peter Roda (India), Ben Tausig (Thailand), and Karen Weber (Russia). From the Tisch School of the Arts, M.F.A. student Audrey Young will study in Portugal.
Henry Luce Scholarship
Katherine E. Otto (CAS ’08, Wagner ’09) has been named a Luce Scholar, which will enable her to pursue a public health internship in Indonesia next year.
Morris K. Udall Scholarship
Katherine Fritz (Gallatin ’10) earned a Udall scholarship, which offers up to $5,000 for students who have demonstrated commitment and plan to pursue careers related to the environment. Shane Crary-Ross (SSSW ’11) and Hamna Mela (CAS ’10) received honorable mentions.
Merage American Dream Fellowship
Leonid Traps (CAS ’09), a double major in economics and politics, and Xiao Jing “Iris” Wang (CAS ’09), a double major in biology and East Asian studies, have both been named as Merage Fellows. This award provides $20,000 to help immigrant students pursue their American dream; only 12 graduating seniors receive this honor nationwide.
Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Grant
Chere See (CAS ’11), an international relations major, will receive $3,000 and the opportunity to develop leadership skills through training sessions, seminars, and cultural events. The grant also connects young leaders worldwide with funding and networking opportunities.
National Security Education Program Boren Undergraduate Scholarship
Emily Davenport (CAS ’11), a politics major, will use this $20,000 grant tostudy abroad for a year in Tanzania.
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
Elika Bergelson (CAS ’07) is pursuing graduate study in psycholinguistics at the University of Pennsylvania. Christina Bergey (CAS ’09) will begin graduate study in physical anthropology at NYU next fall. Yelena Bronevetsky (CAS ’06) is pursuing graduate study in immunology at the University of California, San Francisco. Rachel Flamenbaum (CAS ’07) will pursue a program in linguistic anthropology at UCLA next fall.
Humanity In Action Fellowship
Four NYU undergraduates—Jesse-Justin Cuevas (Gallatin ’09, declined), Lilly Padia (CAS ’11), Shahin Rothermel (CAS ’09), and Isaac Rowlett (Gallatin ’09)—were awarded this fellowship, which provides support for five weeks of intensive summer study of contemporary minority and human rights issues in Europe.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
This spring, NYU undergraduates received five Gilman scholarships, which fund study abroad experiences. The recipients are Melissa Cheng (Stern ’11), Luisanna DelRosario (CAS ’10), Brianna Paolicelli (CAS ’09), Victoria Spitalieri (Steinhardt ’10), and Tanesha Thomas (CAS ’10).
Critical Language Scholarship
Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, Ksenia Yachmetz (CAS ’09) will use this award, which funds intensive summer institutes in critical languages, to study Russian.
