Steinhardt’s Washington Square East Galleries Presents 32nd Annual Small Works Exhibition

Small doses of dazzling creativity are on display in the 32nd annual “Small Works” exhibition at 80 Washington Square East Galleries, through March 13. The juried exhibition features 216 works that measure 12 inches in every dimension, in every medium imaginable. This year’s exhibition was judged by Daniel Ferris of Stephen Haller Gallery in New York. John Davis Carroll’s Winter, above, a mixed audio-visual construction showing a factory smokestack against a vibrant blue sky, and Missouri River Upstream II, an oil on wood painting of the same scene, won Best in Show, which carried a $300 prize.
“I’m constantly surprised by the innovative use of unexpected materials,” said Ruth Newman, associate director of the gallery. She adds that common everyday forms (pencils, Metrocards, dental floss) and exotic and esoteric media (ostrich eggs, hornet’s nests, and Swarovski crystals) “are all transmuted by artists into extraordinary creations limited only by human imagination.”
