Bloomberg Declares October ‘German-American Friendship Month’
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, left, officially proclaimed the month of September to be “German-American Friendship Month” in New York City during a September reception at NYU’s Deutsches Haus. Also pictured are U.S. Col. Gail Halvorsen (ret.), center, who became known as the “Candy Bomber” during the Berlin Airlift when he brought chocolate and chewing gum to the children of Berlin, and Lars Halter, chairman of New York City’s German-American Steuben Parade. Halvorsen was one of the 2008 parade’s grand marshals.
