Tisch Student is First Runner-Up in Miss Black USA

Safiya Songhai, a graduate film student in the Tisch School of the Arts’s Kanbar Institute of Film and Television and the reigning Miss Black Massachusetts USA, recently placed first runner-up in the Miss Black USA 2008 pageant. As the first runner-up, she receives a $5,000 scholarship and will be featured as Jet Beauty of the Week in an upcoming edition. The event was held in June in Las Vegas.
     Songhai, a Roxbury, MA native, is an Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist and film director. She holds a B.S. degree in communications and film production from Howard University.
     The Miss Black USA pageant is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational and personal development opportunities to young women of color.
