Weiner Lecture Examines Honk Horn and Acoustic Music of Ghana
Professor
Steven Feld recently discussed “Honk Horn Music
and the Acoustic Materiality of Modernity in Accra, Ghana” at the Department of
Anthropology’s 10th annual Annette B. Weiner Memorial Lecture. Feld is
distinguished professor of anthropology and music at the University of New
Mexico.
Feld’s documentary CD recordings
from New Guinea, Europe, Japan, and Ghana include “Voices of the Rainforest,”
“Bells and Winter Festivals of Greek Macedonia,” “Suikinkutsu,” and “Por Por:
Honk Horn Music of Ghana.” Currently he is producing a series of documentary
films about jazz cosmopolitanism in Accra.
The Weiner lecture series, which
brings a distinguished anthropologist to NYU each year, was established in
memory of Annette B. Weiner, who was the Kriser Distinguished Professor of
Anthropology at NYU from 1981 until her death in 1997. She also chaired the
anthropology department and served as dean of the Graduate School of Arts and
Science.
