College of Nursing Honors Advocate for the Underserved
The College of Nursing recently honored alumna Jean Elizabeth Swinney, pictured at right, at its 17th annual Estelle Osborne Recognition Ceremony. Swinney, who received her B.S. in nursing in 1964 and M.A. in 1980 from NYU and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, was honored for a career dedicated to health care for underserved populations in the United States and Africa. Broadcast journalist Cheryl Washington served as the emcee for the afternoon.
Third Annual Leadership Institute for Black Nurses
Eighteen fellows will participate in NYU’s third annual Leadership Institute for Black Nurses throughout this spring. The institute was founded not only to advance black nurses’ careers but also to address the extreme disparities in health between African-Americans and other groups in the United States.
Conceived by Nursing Dean Terry Fulmer with Yvonne Wesley, nursing alumna and adjunct associate professor, the institute is directed by professor May Dobal, co-directed by Wesley, and is sponsored by a grant of $100,000 from HIP Health Plan of New York.
