NYU’s Deutsches Haus Receives $1 Million Gift
By James Devitt
The Faculty of Arts and Science at NYU has received a $1 million gift from the German Academic Exchange Service to support the university’s Deutsches Haus, its 30-year-old German cultural center, and to continue backing the University’s Max Weber Chair, which was established in 1995 to promote close friendship between the United States and Germany through cooperation in the humanities and social sciences.
The German Academic Exchange Service’s, or Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), gift will particularly expand Deutsches Haus programming to new fields and audiences. These activities will contribute to the roles of Deutsches Haus and the Max Weber Chair as ambassadors for continued academic cooperation between the U.S. and Germany and create new opportunities for collaboration with other universities, and NYU’s other schools, including conferences and symposia.
The December signing ceremony at Deutsches Haus included German Consul-General Hans-Jürgen Heimsoeth, Faculty of Arts and Science Dean Richard Foley, Ulrich Grothus, director of DAAD New York, and Deutsches Haus Director Kathrin DiPaola.
