NYU Co-Hosts Regional Equestrian Competition
If
Jamaica could have an Olympic bobsledding team, then surely NYU can field a
club equestrian team—and so it has since 1985.
Co-captained by Emily Oatis
and Stacy Schwartz, both students in the
Gallatin School of Individualized Study, the NYU equestrian team is coached by
Ashton Phillips, who also leads the Princeton squad. Like their New York gridiron brethren, the
Giants, NYU’s riders practice in New Jersey—the Essex Equestrian Center in West
Orange, which is about a 35-minute drive from the Washington Square campus.
“A lot of students come to NYU—with and without equestrian-related backgrounds—and want to ride,” says Schwartz, who adds that any student enrolled at the University full-time may apply for a position on the team, which currently has about its maximum of 30 riders.
NYU’s equestrian team is part of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), competing in the same region against 12 other schools, including Columbia, Yale, and Fairfield universities.
On Sun., March 9, the team co-hosts a regional competition at the Parkview Equestrian Center in Central Islip. For more, go to www.nyu.edu/athletics/clubs/equestrian/.

NYU Celebrates Third Annual MLK Week
“Dare
to D.R.E.A.M” was the theme for NYU’s third annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Week, held January 21-26. D.R.E.A.M.
is an acronym for Deconstruct, Reflect, Envision, Act, and Mobilize. A
University-wide Marquee Celebration took place Jan. 24, and featured remarks
from President John Sexton, NYU student performers, and the 2008 MLK
Humanitarian Award presentation to University Professor Anna Deavere Smith, at right. Other events included a
basketball doubleheader between Hunter College and New York University men’s and women’s varsity teams, dozens of volunteer opportunities
coordinated by the Office of Government and Community Affairs, and additional programs,
symposia, and film screenings offered by NYU student organizations, academic departments, and administrative units.

Children of NYU faculty, pictured above, got to test their skills on the court at the annual event. The Faculty Senators Council also recently hosted its Spring Semester Faculty Reception at the Torch Club, an annual event at which President John Sexton, pictured at far right, greeted the University’s new faculty. More than 400 attended the Jan. 29 event.
Twenty-Nine Inducted Into NYU’s Acton Society
NYU’s
Sir Harold Acton Society inducted its newest members during a special dinner at
the Kimmel Center for University Life on Jan. 23. The Acton Society
recognizes donors who have made individual contributions of $1 million or more
to the University. This year, 29 donors joined the over 400 Acton Society
members who have been inducted since 1995.
