NYU Prepares to Celebrate Annual MLK Week

“Dare to D.R.E.A.M” will be the theme for NYU’s third annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Week, to be held January 21-26.

D.R.E.A.M. is an acronym for Deconstruct, Reflect, Envision, Act, and Mobilize. As NYU celebrates the life and influence of King, participants will embrace discussion and discourse that promotes awareness and increases knowledge about his work, passion, and persistence.

A University-wide Marquee Celebration will take place on Jan. 24, and will feature remarks by President John Sexton, NYU student performers, the 2008 MLK Humanitarian Award presentation to University Professor Anna Deavere Smith, and a “Dare to Dream” Student Competition.

Other events include a basketball doubleheader between Hunter College and NYU’s varsity teams, dozens of volunteer opportunities coordinated by the Office of Government and Community Affairs, and additional programs, symposia, and film screenings offered by NYU student organizations, academic departments, and administrative units. Last year over 60 programs were offered with attendance exceeding 2,500 participants. If your NYU organization would like to plan an event to include in MLK Week programming, go to www.nyu. edu/mlkweek.
