Syllabus Item vs. Syllabus Tool

In Blackboard

Dr. Tester uploaded a PDF version of her syllabus to the Course Information section. The syllabus file was a static file that could only be downloaded by students.

Creating Syllabus Items

Dr. Tester creates a Syllabus that links to readings and teaching materials she’s added to the Resources area, as well as links to assignments, tests, and other webpages. In this way, Dr. Tester’s students can use the syllabus as a starting point to find different content in the course. Meanwhile, she can still attach the syllabus as a Word or PDF file for students to download if they wish.

To get the link for the redirecting items to the Resources area, be sure to get the URL first from the Resources Folder > Edit Details > Web Address > Select URL (for copying).

Redirect Your Syllabus

Dr. Tester can also redirect her students to the syllabus if the syllabus has an external webpage. For example, Dr. Tester has her syllabus saved as an NYU Google document. She can use that link and redirect her students to ensure that any and all revisions on the Google doc will show up in her syllabus displayed in NYU Classes.

Course Sections

There are Several Methods for Creating a Syllabus

  • Create separate syllabus items that can be reordered and managed individually.
  • Create a single syllabus document either by authoring it in the Syllabus tool and pasting in content OR redirect the syllabus to a website external to NYU Classes
  • You can either build syllabus items or redirect your syllabus; you cannot use both in the syllabus tools
