NYU Remote Possibilities

NYU has historically had multiple academic centers throughout the City and continues to operate in this manner today with five academic Centers. These academic centers were established due to their ability to serve an academic mission, fulfill a programmatic need, and meet market demands.

The University believes a multi-center approach is still valid for the future and that existing centers can be strengthened and new ones developed. Guiding the growth or establishment of these new Centers it will adhere to the following guidelines.

  • Strengthen and build upon existing Remote Locations where possible and practical.
  • Be within an approximately 20-25 minute public transportation trip to the NYU Core.
  • Allow for incremental growth opportunities to allow programs and uses to develop in manageable increments.
  • Have the ability to over time establish a critical mass of programs and uses over time.

Health Corridor

Opportunities

  • Location near existing NYU facilities and East River Science Park.
  • Scale of area is compatible with NYU's needs.
  • Strong institutional presence in the neighborhood already exists.
  • Growing NYU health related uses in area, anchored by the Basic Science Block.
  • Existing NYU shuttle transportation to area.

Constraints

  • Competitive real estate pressures on acquisition of new sites.
  • Lack of public transportation access.

Health Corridor

The Health Corridor is a promising location for future development because of its close proximity to NYU's existing medical center and other health, science and research centers like the East River Science Park, Bellevue and the Brookdale Health Science Center. However, with the exception of Brookdale, there is a limited supply of development sites in the area.

Health Corridor

The Health Corridor is located near two existing NYU undergraduate and graduate dorms, the 26th Street Dorm and Gramercy Green. Gramercy Green which will open in the fall to undergraduates has generated significant student interest and the idea of expanding near the NYU Medial Center has generally been well received by the NYU Community.

Health Corridor

The Health Corridor has limited public transportation to the Washington Square Area, but the NYU Bus System does provide direct access from Washington Square to the Medical Center.

Downtown Brooklyn

Opportunities

  • Location near Polytechnic, future NYU partner.
  • Potential sites available for future academic or residential purposes.
  • Site is accessible by public transportation and a 15-minute subway ride from the NYU Core.

Constraints

  • Area immediately around Polytechnic has little 24 hour activity, but is changing rapidly.
  • Competitive real estate pressures on the acquisition of new sites.

Downtown Brooklyn

NYU's upcoming merger with Polytechnic University establishes Downtown Brooklyn as another NYU center and opens up opportunities for future development in the surrounding area. However the area immediately surrounding Polytechnic currently has little 24-hour activity.

Downtown Brooklyn

Downtown Brooklyn is located in the heart of diverse and culturally vibrant Brooklyn neighborhoods like Ft. Greene, Boerum Hill, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO and is located within close proximity of institutions like the Brooklyn Academy of Music. These cultural resources in combination with the presence of education institutions like Polytechnic, Pratt and Long Island University and the availability of properly-scaled development sites, make Downtown Brooklyn an appealing site for future NYU development. However, the area is equally appealing to other developers creating a competitive real estate market.

Downtown Brooklyn

Downtown Brooklyn is a major transportation hub served by almost all MTA subway lines and is a short 20-minute commute to NYU's Washington Square Campus. However there is still concern from NYU undergraduate students regarding the commute between campuses and being located outside of Manhattan.

Governors Island

Opportunities

  • Commutable distance to Washington Square Center.
  • Large amount of square footage available for academic or residential uses.
  • Significant open space could provide locations for NYU's athletic teams.
  • New development on the Island would not conflict with existing neighborhoods.

Constraints

  • No current public transportation access.
  • Major infrastructure needed to prepare site for NYU use.
  • Does not provide an "in and of the City" experience for students and faculty.

Governors Island

Governors Island is a site that many community members think would be a good option for NYU growth. The northern portion of the island's campus-like atmosphere and the lack of existing residents or conflicting uses on the island make the island well suited to university development. However, several NYU students, especially undergraduates, have expressed concern about going to school on an island so isolated from the rest of the city.

Governors Island

Governors Island has a large amount of square footage available for academic and residential uses, approximately 1 million square feet. The island contains significant opportunities for both the adaptation of existing historic buildings and the construction of new buildings. However a significant infrastructure investment would be necessary in order to prepare these development sites for NYU use.

Governors Island

Governors Island is currently only accessible by ferry and if NYU were to develop on the island it would be necessary to create another ferry route and landing to handle NYU traffic. Students have expressed concern about going to school on an island that is only accessible by ferry.
