Prior to assuming leadership of the PhD program, Dr. Deborah Chyun was on the faculty at Yale School of Nursing for more than 20 years, during which time she served as Specialty Director of the Adult Advanced Practice Nursing Program. Dr. Chyun's program of research is focused on cardiac-related outcomes, psychosocial and behavioral factors, and quality of life in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Her expertise in cardiovascular nursing and chronic disease epidemiology has provided a unique opportunity to expand the understanding of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in older adults through multiple studies. As co-principal investigator in a 14-site screening trial, she has brought a nursing perspective to the design and conduct of this large trial. Findings have made a significant contribution to knowledge of cardiac autonomic neuropathy and asymptomatic heart disease, and have been incorporated into American Diabetes Association clinical practice recommendations. Dr. Chyun serves as manuscript reviewer for a variety of nursing and medical journals including, Nursing Research, Research in Nursing and Health, Circulation, American Journal of Cardiology, American Heart Journal, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and Diabetes Care. She has lectured and consulted nationally and internationally on topics related to type 2 diabetes and CVD. As an active member of the American Heart Association, Dr. Chyun has represented nursing on interdisciplinary committees focusing on prevention, epidemiology and the diabetes.
