The College’s Center for International Affairs, Director, Professor Madeline Naegle, is the base for the College’s international activities in Latin America and around the world. Activities include Latin American Projects, the Pan American (PAHO)/World Health Organization (WHO) Nursing Collaborating Center, Faculty Consultation and Exchange and, in collaboration with the College of Nursing and NYU, Study Abroad Programs. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is a public health agency, which is the Regional Office for the Americas and the World Health Organization. Learn more about it on www.paho.org.
The College’s Center for International Affairs will be working with the WHO between 2008 and 2012 to achieve the following goals:
- Promote collaborative organizational and institutional networks focused on health and aging in the PAHO region and linked to PAHO goals.
- Using established resources, networks and relationships, the Collaborating Center will create an expanding database of collaborating experts, agencies, educational institutions and resources on health aging and geriatric care.
- Improve the capacity and resources of nursing and other health care providers to deliver nursing care to older adults in Latin America.
- Increase the capacity to design, implement and critique research, and to deliver evidence-based heath care to older adults in Latin America.
- Working with Latin American partners (ACHIEEN, ACOFAEN, ALADEFE and others) and the Pless Center for Nursing Research at NYU College of Nursing, the Collaborating Center will develop jointly sponsored workshops to augment skills of Latin American nurse researchers in research to improve access, quality and cost effectiveness of nursing care of older adults and their families.
- NYU College of Nursing, with other partners, will jointly develop a model for an online course in community-based care of older adults appropriate to host institutions and population needs.
