MISSION

In keeping with a long tradition of commitment to Black nursing leadership, the mission of the New York University Leadership Institute for Black Nurses at NYU College of Nursing is to prepare nurses of African descent for leadership positions. Through education and mentorship, the New York University Leadership Institute for Black Nurses serves as a resource to empower nurses that seek career advancement in administration, education, research.

Program Overview:
  • 10 to 12 Fellows will be selected to participate in a 6 month program.
  • Six full day executive leadership seminars once a month, with outstanding national experts
  • Closing celebration
The Curriculum Topics include:
  • Individual Efficacy
  • Health Disparities
  • Paradigms of Leadership
  • Evaluation and Outcomes
  • Negotiation and Collaborative Problem-Solving
  • The Economics of Health Care
  • Managed Care and Government Relations
  • Time Management
  • Strategic Analysis and Planning

  • Seminars are held from January to June once a month on Fridays (usually the first Friday of each month).
  • Seminars begin at 8:30am for breakfast and end at 4:00 pm.
  • A final Celebration will take place in early June from 4-6 pm where guests are invited.
Leadership Project:
Fellows design a Leadership Project for their facility or community that addresses health disparities. Fellows are encouraged to apply leadership principles learned at the seminars. The Fellows will present their projects to their peers and mentors.

The Leadership Institute for Black Nurses is expertly directed by Dr. Yvonne Wesley. They draw on outstanding African American national nursing leadership, as well as a wide range of experts. Mentors are African American nurse leaders in the New York metropolitan area.

Continuing Education Provided:
The New York University Center for Continuing Education in Nursing is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the New York State Nurses Association Council on Continuing Education which is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation

Participants will be selected by review panel, with notification by November 30, 2011.

  • Please complete the application using 12pt type.
  • Print 3 copies of all parts
  • Sign application
  • Include Resume
  • Include 2 recommendations ( see below for details)
  • Mail application and recommendations by OCTOBER 31, 2011 to:

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
We respectfully ask that applicants enclose two (2) letters of recommendation with the completed application. The Chief Nursing Officer or equivalent should provide one recommendation, and the applicant’s direct supervisor should provide the second recommendation. Letters of recommendation must include the following: reference name, title, organization, address, phone, and fax, applicant name, reference signature and date. Letters of reference should address the following questions:
  1. In what capacity do you know the applicant?
  2. How long have you known the applicant?
  3. Why do you believe the applicant has the potential to be a change agent? Please elaborate on reasons for supporting the applicant and provide examples if possible.
Tuition: $1,500.00 PER FELLOW, due after acceptance.
