Program Overview
The NYUCN Undergraduate Peer Advising Program, which is based on a student mentoring model, provides
opportunities for newer Nursing students to connect with and learn from upperclassmen in the College.
I. Goals of the Peer Advising Program
- Assist traditional students and new accelerated students in transitioning into and connecting with the
NYUCN community
- Strengthen our student community by providing a peer support system that supplements the current
professional advising and faculty mentoring structure
- Provide opportunities for students to develop and apply mentoring skills outside of the classroom and
clinical setting
II. Roles & Responsibilities
To Qualify to be a Peer Advisor, a student must...
- Be an active NYUCN undergraduate student who has progressed into the third sequence of clinical
nursing courses, including Adult & Elder Nursing III
- Possess a minimum of a 2.7 GPA
- Be meeting both the Requirements for Academic Integrity and Professional Behavior and the Technical
Standards
Peer Advisor Responsibilities
- Attend Peer Advisor Training
- Outreach to and meet with their assigned peer advisee(s) at least twice a semester
- Attend one NYUCN sponsored event with peer advisee(s) over the course of a semester
- Communicate progress, concerns, activity to the Office of Academic Advising & Learning Development
- Adhere to the Requirements for Professional Behavior. Students serving in a peer advising capacity
represent the College of Nursing and therefore the highest standards of professionalism are expected to
be maintained.
Peer Advisors will share their experiences with newer Nursing students related to:
- Course expectations including on and off-campus clinicals
- Study skill strategies
- Time management skills for balancing course work and student life
- Undergraduate Nursing Student Organization (UNSO) and other Nursing student groups
- NYUCN resources
- NYU student clubs and other resources
A Peer Advisor is not...
- A counselor or therapist
- An academic advisor
- The sole supporter of their advisee
- A tutor
- Accessible 24/7
To Qualify to be Peer Advisee, a student must...

Be an active NYUCN undergraduate student who has not yet progressed into the third clinical sequence
Advisee Responsibilities

IV. How to Participate
Undergraduate students who are interested in serving as a Peer Advisor or Peer Advisee should submit an
application to the Office of Academic Advising & Learning Development via email at or
in-person at 726 Broadway, Room 1015A or Room 1015C.
Peer Advising assignments will be made on an on-going basis.
