Outcomes from Phase 1:
College Breakthrough Series - Depression

January 2007 - March 2008

Over 71,000 students were screened for depression across eight participating sites; ~36% were self-described ethnic minority students. The final CBS-D Depression Registry included 944 students, far exceeding our minimum goal of 400 students. 7 participating sites used data to monitor and evaluate treatment progress. All schools implemented most aspects of evidence-based care management practices

The data indicates that we met or exceeded most (5/6) benchmarks of care that were created at the outset of the project:

Clinical Outcomes

All treatment outcome goals were set aggressively above the top end of the of the range of results from effectiveness studies for depression outcomes in different community samples.

Data from seven universities collected between January 2007 – March 2008

  • 49% of depressed students in treatment showed significant improvement (5-pt or greater decrease PHQ-9 score) within 8 weeks ((GOAL: 40%)
  • 45% of depressed students with a partial remission (PHQ-9 score of ≤ 9) within 12 weeks (GOAL 40%)
  • 52% of registry students with reported functional recovery, which was defined as a rating of ‘none’ or ‘somewhat’ on a global functioning question by 12 weeks (GOAL: 40%)

Process Outcomes

  • 66% had follow-up PHQ-9 within 4 weeks of initial assessment (GOAL: 80%)
  • 93% with evidence-based treatment initiation (either medication or attended a counseling session) within 4 weeks (GOAL: 50%)
  • 58% achieved at least one documented self-management goal within 8 weeks (GOAL: 60%).
