Administrative Staff

Marcia Thomas

As Administrative Director, Marcia oversees all administrative activities for the NYU Master's Program in Global Public Health. With a background in nutrition, she combines her experience in academic administration with over 10 years of direct public health work in the area of community-based approaches to improving nutrition and chronic disease and holds several public health leadership positions at the local and national level. A Registered Dietitian, Marcia received her B.S. in Nutrition from Virginia Tech, an M.S. in Nutrition from Penn State and her M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health.

Amy Joyce

Amy coordinates and develops our internship and capstone programs as well as strengthening public health practice and professional development opportunities for the program. After completing a Masters Degree in Gender, Social Policy, and Development at the London School of Economics in 2005, Amy acted as an independent consultant for a variety of organizations, including the Population Council, UN Division for the Advancement of Women, and Plan International UK. Her research with these organizations centered around gender and HIV and on the health of young people, with a specific focus on adolescent girls. She received an undergraduate degree in International Development from Brown University in Providence, RI, and has also worked with the International Education and Resource Network in New York City and interned at Relief-International in London.

Michael Mathis

Michael is responsible for managing all aspects of the admissions, recruitment, and enrollment effort for the Master’s Program in Global Public Health. Michael comes to us from Columbia University’s School of Continuing Education where he was Assistant Director of Admissions. Prior to this, he spent several years in undergraduate admissions in Detroit until he moved to Chicago to pursue his first Master’s degree. While in the Second City, Michael participated in various admissions internships and externships before accepting a position at DePaul University in program implementation. Although he enjoyed his work in student affairs, admissions and enrollment management remained a key area of interest. Thus, Michael accepted a position in the office of Undergraduate admissions at Loyola University Chicago while finishing his degree. Michael received his BS in Biology from the University of Detroit Mercy, his M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from Loyola University Chicago, and is currently finishing degree requirements for the MS in Fundraising Management at Columbia University.

Janet Schaeffer

Janet Schaeffer provides extensive program administrative support to Global MPH faculty, staff and students as well as to the Office of the Senior Vice President for Health. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from New York University and has worked at NYU for 17 years, including FAS’ Department of Near Eastern Languages & Literatures and the Office of the Senior Vice President for External Affairs. Before joining the Global MPH program she was Donor Relations Coordinator in the Development office, where she acknowledged the gifts of high-end donors and worked closely with the stewardship and Corporate & Foundation Relations teams.
