showUcare

The media would have us believe that our society is apathetic... that we don’t care.

We don't buy that.

showUcare is a week during which we demonstrate that our society really does care.
Held in celebration of National Volunteer Week and Global Youth Service Day during April 20 – April 26, 2013, the NYU community will not only show what they care about, but will also engage in active service opportunities, a forum on community engagement and social justice, and a social media campaign --- all designed to bring awareness to various social causes and provide the University community with resources for effective engagement, while highlighting the importance of volunteerism and service.

National Volunteer Week focuses national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism and service as an integral aspect of our civic leadership.  Global Youth Service Day celebrates and mobilizes the millions of young people who improve their communities each day of the year through service.

showUcare week is an initiative sponsored by the Center for Student Activities, Leadership and Service and the NYU Civic Team.

The Civic Team encourages NYU to show you care by:

  • Engaging in a local service activity
  • Attending a session on human rights and social justice @ Civic Camp
  • Wearing a shirt that showcases a cause, a charity, a campaign, or issue that you care about
  • Using social media to spread awareness

Kimmel Center for University Life, 7th Floor
60 Washington Square South

As part of showUcare week, Civic Camp is a day-long intensive program intended to prepare students to engage their communities in human rights initiatives and challenge individuals to think critically about change efforts in the global society. Encouraging all members of the Global Network University to be active and effective global citizens, we aim to provide students with different trajectories of creating change, as well as opportunities to network and enhance skill development. Through Civic Camp, we hope to share tools and start conversations for thinking about how we engage in service and the communities with which we collaborate.

Jumpstart for a Day is an annual festival celebrating literacy and service that brings volunteer groups from local universities and groups together with young children. This will be our third year hosting JFAD in the Lower East Side of Manhattan!

Volunteers host an activity table in the park, read with children and support them in exploratory and literacy enrichment activities that are designed to help them develop the language and literacy skills necessary for school success. Many of the activities will introduce a children’s book and offer activities related to the book. For example, planned activities include puppet making and book making.

Volunteers will receive confirmation emails and more information after filling out the RSVP. Individuals will be given specific assignments on the day of the event.

Every Tuesday and Sunday, between 10am and 4pm, beginning on Sunday, April 14th and ending on Tuesday October 29th, we host regular volunteer days. All volunteers must be 16 and older. The farm is 47 acres, with two acres cultivated for vegetable production. Volunteers can simply show up on those days, between those hours, and will assist farmers in our growing fields. Volunteers can stay the whole day, or just a few hours, depending on what works for their schedule. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and bring a lunch if you plan on staying most of the day. There is no need to sign up or apply before volunteering. For first time volunteers, stop by our welcome center (first building on your left as you enter), and an employee there will point you in the right direction. Groups of 7 or more must schedule a date beforehand.
