Trip and Site Leader Applications 2013-2014

AB

So you're interested in becoming a site leader?
We couldn't be more happy to hear it!

For the 2013-2014 academic year, the Alternative Breaks program is offering two different options for applying to be a site leader:

  • Applying for a Pre-Selected Trip
  • Proposing an Alternative Breaks Trip

The "Guide to Planning an Alternative Breaks Trip" explains the process of applying for a pre-selected trip as well as for proposing a trip. We suggest reading through the entire guide to gain a better understanding of both options and to then apply for the option of your choosing. This guide will explain the roles and responsibilities of an Alternative Break site leader in addition to outlining the work to be accomplished by site leaders during the summer as well as the planning and preparing of trip materials (i.e. education, orientation, training, fundraising, etc) before the start of the academic year. Leading an Alternative Break trip is a major time commitment and can be challenging at times, but we promise it will be one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences you will have at NYU! (Even if you are on the fence about whether you should apply, check out the guide as well as the two application links just to see what the process looks like and the options available to you.)

Here is a short outline of what applying for a pre-selected trip and proposing a new trip looks like, although the Guide to Planning an Alternative Breaks Trip will be a greater resource for better understanding the processes for each!

Option #1: Applying for a site leader position for a pre-selected trip

Although site leaders will not be researching and choosing a host organization, the co-site leader pairs will be engaged for the entirety of the logistical planning during the summer. A board mentor will be paired with the co-site leaders of each trip to facilitate the planning process, but it will ultimately be up to the co-site leaders to coordinate the logistical aspects of each trip. In addition, planning and preparing educational, fundraising, orientation, and training materials for the group will begin in the summer in order to ensure a smoother transition into the school year. Site leaders will work alongside their board mentor during the selection process in the fall and will thereby be more engaged in the overall process of planning and leading a successful Alternative Breaks trip.  Click here to download the site leader application for a pre-selected trip.

Option #2: Proposing an Alternative Breaks trip

Site leaders interested in this option must research a social issue that they would like to work with as well as a host organization and site location that aligns with this social issue. The preliminary proposal application utlines how the applications will be evaluated and what information must be included in this preliminary step. If the preliminary proposal is accepted, site leaders will be paired up with a board mentor to complete the final proposal application to be turned in at the end of July. Proposing a trip presents the opportunity for site leaders to focus on social issues that may or may not have been addressed on previous Alternative Break trips. There are no limits to what social issues site leaders choose to focus on; ultimately your passion and dedication for examining a social issue will influence the level of engagement of your participants so we encourage you to choose a social issue which you are genuinely interested in and care about!  Click here to download the preliminary trip proposal applicaiton.
