Join the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, in collaboration with the Center for Spiritual Life, to hear painter and photographer Todd Drake discuss the Muslim Self Portrait Project, an exhibition of Muslim American self-portraits and personal narratives conveying personal stories through artistic expression. Drake engages various communities to tell their stories, abiding by the philosophy that “art defines us as being human.” Drake uses art to combat exclusion and dehumanization, and through the Muslim Self Portrait Project, he works to deconstruct Islamaphobia specifically. IEW Movie: Crossing Borders

Crossing Borders is a documentary that follows four Moroccan and four American university students as they travel together through Morocco and, in the process of discovering “The Other” discover themselves. With group travels and frank discussions, the students confront the complex implications of the supposed “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West. Arnd Waechter, the film director, will be present for discussion after the film. Everyone is welcome. Photo ID is required to enter the building. For the closing of International Education Week, join in for a screening of the documentary 2 Million Minutes. Created by Broken Pencil Productions, a leader in the field for education documentaries, this hour long film follows six secondary students across the world on their journey through high school. The experiences of these students highlight several of the key differences between the secondary education systems of the U.S., China, and India. Following the film, is a discussion of the documentary and a dialogue of the differences between the national education systems of these nations.
