FOCUS Mentorship Program

Administrators and staff across the University are invited to participate in The Center’s FOCUS Mentorship Program. Mentors are assigned to interested first or second year undergraduate students that identify as first generation college students and/or students of color. FOCUS is a structured mentorship program designed to offer students with the opportunity to develop relationships with NYU Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Graduate Students or other professionals who will serve as resources and/or advocates through establishing an ongoing mentoring relationship. 

Graduate Students/Faculty of Color Dinner Series

Allows for informal conversations between faculty and graduate students of color over dinner. The theme allows for faculty to share their research and provide tips and other advice to graduate students through their own expertise or shared experience. Each monthly dinner focuses on a different topic and all members of the university community are welcome to attend.

Graduate Students of Color Socials

Each monthly social is design for graduate students to network with each other across disciplines in a relaxing environment. All members of the University community are welcome to attend. Join us to Mix, Mingle & Build community. Socials include complementary appetizers, drink specials all night and music by DJ Trends. 

Hip-Hop and Pedagogy Initiative

The Hip-Hop and Pedagogy Initiative serves as an umbrella for the NYU community for hip-hop programming and events, and offers cutting edge resources and referrals for academic based hip-hop courses and trainings.

-ISM Project

What is an "-ism?" They surround us. We live them. We embrace them. We resist them. Examine the complex ways isms impact your life by taking part in the -ISM Project.  The NASPA Award winning –ISM Project encourages students to analyze various "–isms" in our communities as they relate to race/ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic class, sex/gender, political affiliation, religion/spirituality, and other existing social constructs and identities. UParticipants utilize artistic platforms to creatively express their research and personal understanding of their selected -isms. The resulting projects are showcased at the annual –ISM Project Showcase at the end of the spring semester.

Making it in Media

Making it in Media is a networking Q & A series in partnership with the Wasserman Center for Career Development that provides an opportunity for those interested in a career in media to connect with media professionals of diverse backgrounds. The panelists share how social identities and diversity have impacted their careers. MIIM is informative and open to all, offering job/internship suggestions, career advice, and general media analysis from industry veterans. Lunch is provided.

Multiple Identity Film/Speaker Series

Multiple Identity Film/Speaker Series features local speakers and independent films that explore innovative ways personal and social identities such as race, class, religion, sexual orientation, gender and sexuality intersect.

Nia Awards

The Nia (a Swahili word meaning “purpose”) Awards Ceremony honors the achievements of undergraduate and graduate students committed to promoting diversity and social justice from across the University each spring. In addition to student awards, Nia also celebrates an NYU alumni, faculty and administrator that demonstrates outstanding commitment to student development and service.  We also honor the various groups and leaders within the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs. All NYU students, faculty, staff, and administrators are encouraged to nominate their peers and colleagues!
