Intergroup Dialogue

The Intergroup Dialogue Program is a nationally recognized 1-credit course that brings together small groups of students from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences and gain new knowledge related to diversity and social justice. This 8-week course is open to all NYU undergraduate students, facilitated by graduate students or NYU professionals, and takes place in the Spring semester.

The IGD model is designed to promote positive intergroup relations among students, staff, and faculty and improve the campus climate at NYU. The model focuses specifically on intergroup dynamics within the context of an institution of higher education while promoting awareness and change in intergroup relations at the individual, cultural, and institutional levels. The guiding assumption is that diversity is an institutional asset and can be used to enhance growth of the NYU community while also achieving specific educational outcomes.

Past IGD sections include: Race, Gender, Bi/Multiracial, Spirituality, Sexuality, Jewish/Muslim, Arts based Race, Faith and Sexuality, and Jewish/Black.

Important Information:

Dialogues are 8 weeks long.
Dialogues begin on 02/08 and meet until 04/26 (including orientation and celebration, does NOT meet week of Spring Break).
All dialogues will meet on FRIDAY from 2-4 PM. (some courses may be held at alternate times)

Additional Undergraduate Participant Information:

All accepted applicants must register before 01/27/13.

Additional Graduate Student information:

Applicants may be contacted for an interview. All interviews will be conducted prior to 12/04/12.
Accepted Graduate Student Facilitators will be notified by 12/09 and must confirm participation by 12/14.
Facilitators will be participate in training, group meetings, and facilitate a dialogue ALL in Spring Semester.
Facilitators must be available for MANDATORY training on 01/31 (9-5 PM) AND 02/01 (9-5 PM).
Facilitators must be available on Friday mornings 10:30-12 noon beginning 02/08 (until 4/27) and Friday afternoons 2-4 PM beginning 02/08 (until 04/26, including celebration) [with the exception of Spring Break].
Facilitators are also required to have weekly meetings with their coach, submit session feedback forms, and complete an evaluation of their session upon completion of facilitation.
Due to the commitment IGD requires, facilitators are strongly encouraged to look into IGD as a Field Work or Independent Study.

Frequently Asked Questions about Intergroup Dialogue (IGD)

As an Undergraduate Student how do I get involved with Intergroup Dialogue?

Undergraduate students from all colleges are encouraged to apply as participants of the IGD course. Students would take the 8-week course for 1-credit. Courses will be held from 2/08 until 4/26, with the exception of the week of Spring Break on Friday afternoons from 2:00-4:00 PM. This also includes the all-section celebration after the completion of the course.

As a Graduate Student how do I get involved with Intergroup Dialogue?

Graduate Students can apply to be a co-facilitator of an IGD section. All selected facilitators are required to attend 2 full day trainings and participate in on-going training/group meetings with other course facilitators. Training dates are 1/31 and 2/1. Group meetings will run on Friday mornings from 2/08 until 4/26 (with the exception of the week of Spring Break) from 10:30-12:00 PM and the undergraduate courses will be held from 2/08-4/26 (with the exception of the week of Spring Break) from 2:00-4:00 PM.

How long is the Intergroup Dialogue Course?

Intergroup Dialogue is an 8-week course that is offered each Spring Semester. In Spring 2012 the class will be held once a week from 2/08 until 4/26, this includes the celebration for all participants. IGD does not meet the week of Spring Break.

When will the course meet?

Typically the course will meet on Friday afternoons from 2:00-4:00 PM. However, some courses may be held at alternate times. The course will begin meeting the week of 2/08 until 4/26, with the exception of Spring Break.

How do I register for the course?

Once accepted into the program, registration information will be sent to students.

What is the timeline for the application for the IGD course?

Graduate Students must apply by 11/25/12 before midnight and selected applicants will be contact for an interview. Interviews will be held prior to 12/4 and acceptance into the program will be immediately after.
Undergraduate Students must apply by 12/02/12 and will notified of sections shortly after.

How is this course different from other NYU courses?

IGD is a facilitated course that is based on a national model. The model focuses specifically on intergroup dynamics within the context of an institution of higher education while promoting awareness and change in intergroup relations at the individual, cultural, and institutional levels. The course is based on building group dynamics and strengthening knowledge around diversity and social justice issues through facilitated dialogue, engaging in conversations around current issues and trends, and building a strong community of scholars.

Are there any course requirements?

Students must apply for participation and be accepted into the program.

How is this course graded?

IGD is a pass/fail course.

Can I see a syllabus for the course?

Each IGD class is developed following the national model for Intergroup Dialogue. While some activities and readings may remain the same each semester, there will be changes based on the section and facilitators.
