Multicultural Education and Programs

...

In the words of New York University President John Sexton, “diversity is indispensable to NYU’s pursuit of excellence”.  Playing a crucial role in advancing this vision, The Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (The Center) produces intentional and sustained educational initiatives and campus-wide programs in the area of diversity and social justice.  Through collaborations with a broad range of students, faculty, administrators and community partners The Center’s efforts are designed to make an institutional impact in enhancing intercultural awareness and offer compelling ways to explore the complex intersection of race, gender, religion, socio-economic class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, national origin and many other aspects of identity in our daily lives.  Furthermore, The Center commits to providing academic and personal support to diverse students that fosters the highest achievement.  To accomplish these goals and develop the most effective pedagogy and curriculum in the field The Center looks to national models, research and assessment that will measure desired outcomes.  The Center’s work is divided into three general categories:

In making diversity a priority at NYU, the Center presents interactive and intercultural training sessions, thought-provoking presentations, and innovative educational activities that enhance a deeper understanding of the multicultural nature of our campus community. Through diversity education, we seek to develop and create a sensitive, safe, respectful, and inclusive campus environment. Read More.

The Center implements Cultural and Social Justice Programs in an effort to raise awareness around various issues of social identity, such as race, religion, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, etc. It is our goal to create spaces where the NYU community comes together to engage and discuss the various ways that our diverse experiences permeates our lives. The Center’s Student Success programming ranges from working with younger middle school/high school students to providing opportunities for NYU alumni to remain engaged to the campus community and The Center.
