Bomb Threat

Telephone Bomb Threat

  • Remain calm, listen to and do not interrupt the caller.
  • Keep the caller on the line as long as possible. Be polite and show interest to keep them talking.
  • If possible, signal or hand off a note saying “bomb threat - call 911”. Otherwise call or text a supervisor or NYU Public Safety (212-998-2222) or text a colleague.
  • If your phone has caller ID display, take a photo or write on a separate paper the number and/or letters on the window display of the incoming call.
  • Write down as much information as possible – exact wording of threat, type of voice or behavior, etc. that will aid investigators.
  • Record the call, if possible.
  • DO NOT HANG UP, even if the caller does.

Written Bomb Threat

  • Handle the document as little as possible.
  • If the threat appears to pose an immediate and serious danger to the safety of you and others, call 911. If the threat could be carried out, although it may not appear entirely realistic, alert others nearby and call Public Safety immediately (212-998-2222) from a safe location.
  • Take a photo of the threat with your mobile device and/or write the threat exactly as it appears. Include the following:
  • Date/time/location document was found.
  • Any situations or conditions surrounding the discovery/delivery.
  • Document full names of any personnel who witnessed the threat.
  • Take the following actions:
  • Secure the original threat; DO NOT alter the item in any way.
  • If small/removable, place in a bag or envelope.
  • If large/stationary, secure the location.

Emailed Bomb Threat

  • Leave the message open on the computer.
  • If the threat appears to pose an immediate and serious danger to the safety of you and others, call 911. If the threat could be carried out, although it may not appear entirely realistic, alert others nearby and call Public Safety immediately (212-998-2222) from a safe location.
  • Print, photograph, or copy the message and subject line; note the date and time.
  • Do not delete the message.
