Emergencies can happen anywhere at any time, and can include everything from severe weather to a fire. Preparing yourself for an urgent situation is vital to how you handle an actual emergency. Take time to review this material on emergency preparedness and safety in order to work out scenarios of your own.
As every emergency is different and may impose its own set of circumstances, it is important that during the emergency you follow the instructions of Public Safety officers, first responders, and University officials.
To report a campus emergency at NYU in New York City contact NYU’s Public Safety Department at 212-998-2222 or the NYPD or NYFD at 911. For emergency information at other sites around NYU's global network, contact the site director.
Communication before, during and after an event is perhaps the single most important service that maximizes a high level of community preparedness. Frequent, accurate and timely communication helps to reassure the community and connect them with the team guiding them through the emergency.
The University communicates primarily via electronic media, including:

Text alerts will be used to advise members of the community of time-sensitive information. If you have an NYU ID, you will automatically get these alerts. If there have been changes to your cell phone number or email, click here for instructions on how to update these.
In the event of power or network outages in New York City, the University will augment its electronic communication for people who live on or near campus in the following ways:
- Hard-copies of electronic announcements will be posted in every faculty residential building in the lobby and on every floor near each exit stair.
- Hard-copy announcements also will be provided to building staff and doormen. Public Safety officers posted in other buildings also will receive the same information.
- In the event of an extended emergency in New York (longer than 24 hours), “information centers” for walk‐in inquiries will be established in Bobst Library, the Kimmel Center, Silver Towers, and the Palladium Residence Hall.
The Student Affairs Resident Assistant team will be the primary source of non‐electronic information for students in residence halls.
Additional means of communicating University closures with members of our community in New York City and the tri-state area will be through radio stations: 1010WINS, AM 880 CBS, FM 89.1 WNYU.
During an emergency, NYU’s emergency hotline 212-998-1220 will be activated and will have recorded information. In the event of a prolonged emergency, it will be staffed to answer questions and concerns. For emergency information at other sites around NYU's global network, contact the site director.
