"Concrete Poetry to Feed My Mind"

Images from the Fales Library and Special Collections at NYU

The works on view in this exhibition are taken from Solt’s Concrete Poetry: A World View, 1968, and show a cross section of the kinds of experiments concretists were doing. It is important to remember that this movement was global in scope, with a large number of Brazilians, Germans, Americans, French, and others writing in the form.
NYU’s Fales Library has significant holdings of concrete poetry in its Downtown New York Collection. In many ways, concretism is a precursor to the work of downtown artists such as Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Adrian Piper, and many others who used text in new ways in their work.
