Checking In and Out

Move-in Day Preparation

While studying and living in New York City is a unique and exciting experience, it does present several significant challenges, especially on move-in day. You should be sure to:

  • Move-In Day for August is usually the last Sunday in August. Move-In Day for January is usually the second or third Sunday of January. Be sure to consult NYU's academic calendar for dates.
    • If you are a first year student, your move-in time is assigned based on your assigned hall and floor. Plan to arrive only during your specified check-in time.
    • If you are an upperclass student, you may begin arriving on freshmen move-in day or any following day before school starts.
  • Check the weather and traffic forecasts for lower Manhattan, and plan accordingly. New York City parking rules are complicated and are not suspended during check-in.
  • Dress comfortably. You will be on your feet for much of the day, doing a lot of walking and waiting in long lines.
  • Prepare for a long day. It may be hot and humid, or cool and raining. Either way, it is likely that hundreds of residents and family members will be waiting in long lines to check-in and use the elevators. Patience and a sense of humor will be invaluable assets to carry with you throughout the day.
  • Predetermine what is really necessary to bring on check-in day. Seasonal items that are not needed for the first few weeks of the school year can be brought in sometime after check-in day when there is not a long line for the elevator, or you could ship them to the building so they arrive after you check-in. Please note, packages delivered before you arrive cannot be accepted and will be returned to sender.

Checking In

Students will receive "Opening Day" instructions with parking information, tips on what to bring and arrival times with their assignment notice during the first week of August (late December for new Spring students). Students may not move into their residence hall prior to each semester's official Opening Day.

Upon arrival in the Fall semester, students will check-in at their specific residence hall's reception area. Residential Life and Housing Services staff will be available to greet students and provide them with important check-in materials including keys, room inventory reports, area attractions, along with residence hall policies, procedures and amenities.

Checking Out

Students will be provided with detailed check-out instructions towards the end of their license period. Please remember that the Housing License is for both the Fall and Spring Terms. Residents must check-out of their assigned room 24 hours after their last final exam unless they are participating in commencement. Residents who vacate their assignment prior to the end of the license period are still responsible for the terms and conditions of the license.

Residence Halls will remain open during the Winter and Spring recesses. Students who have concurrent housing during the summer (Spring to Summer and/or Summer to Fall) will not be required to leave University Housing between these summer transition periods.
