Map of Rubin

Welcome to Rubin! Located at a swanky address on 5th Avenue , Rubin is a bustling community comprised of approximately 680 first-year students. Rubin is part of the FYRE (First Year Residential Experience) and is served by 13 Resident Assistants (RA), a Residence Hall Director (RHD), a Residence Hall Assistant Director (RHAD), a Residence Hall Resource Manager (RHRM), Resource Center Assistant (RCA), and a Faculty-Fellow in Residence, Heidi White. The staff provides a plethora of programming, so you will find plenty to do in Rubin at NYU and in NYC! Rubin is home to Through the Lens; Human Rights and International Relations Explorations floors as well as a Choices (substance-free) community. We have several great amenities for residents to take advantage of including: a large air conditioned second floor lounge, a black box theatre, a study lounge, a dance room, a piano room, a ping pong room, a darkroom, a billiards room and a great dining hall. At Rubin, we also have a tradition of having the most spirited hall government, which we affectionately refer to as SUG@R (Student Undergraduate Government AtRubin). SUG@R is the governing body in the hall and works to plan programs and makes suggestions for hall improvements. We encourage everyone to get involved in the Rubin community, whether that means running for President of SUG@R, being a floor representative, or attending our fun programs. We know you will enjoy calling Rubin your home!

Hey there, my name is Christina Walsh, and it’s a pleasure to introduce myself to you as the Residence Hall Director of Rubin Hall. Let me tell you a bit about myself: In addition to my penchant for history, I am passionate about the sea, and my studies at Wellesley College reflect both of those interests. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Wellesley College in May 2005. In May 2009, I received a Master of Higher Education Administration from the NYU Steinhardt School, and currently I’m pursuing my PhD in Higher Education from NYU. For the past three and a half years, I served as Residence Hall Operations Manager for NYU’s Third North, the largest freshman dorm in the country. It was a fantastic segue into my current position here at Rubin, which allows me to interact more closely with students on a one-on-one basis. I am originally from Southern California, where I grew up spending time at the beach, which likely inspired my passion for the ocean. But I’ve also traveled extensively throughout Europe, and have a particular affinity for French and Mediterranean culture, history, and food. I moved to Brooklyn in 2005, and have spent the past several years nurturing one of my other great passions: bike riding! I have navigated all five boroughs, so if you’re a fellow cyclist, feel free to share tips! Now that I’m living in Manhattan, I love to soak up the unique energy of the city, especially people-watching in Washington Square Park down the street on Fifth Avenue, possibly checking out one of the indie films at Film Forum a few blocks away, and meeting all of you! My friends call me a “fount of information” and I'm here to help you get adjusted to life at Rubin. Feel free to stop by my office on the second floor and chat, ask me questions about NYU resources, and offer suggestions for what would best help you during the school year. I'll be seeing you at Rubin’s many events, as well. You're in the best place in the world to explore life and your studies, and I’m really looking forward to sharing the adventure with you!

Foremost I am a passionate social/cultural educator and student who is very excited to participate in the Rubin community as the Resource Center Manager. I received my Bachelors from NYU in Individualized Study with a concentration in the Development of Gender and Sexual Identity and am currently working on a Masters in the Interactive Telecommunications Program. In other words, I am a creative and critical thinker who dabbles in new media conception and production. I spend my recreational time discovering the history of NYC, hanging in the parks of the city, reading endless blogs, and attending art performances. I hope to contributeto the Rubin community by developing a welcoming space that is responsive, communal, and stimulating for residents to converse in. Now that you know a little bit about me, I look forward to learning about you and your interests!

Cleaning

Housekeeping services are provided for common areas only, such as corridors and lounges. It is each student's responsibility to maintain his/her individual room and all shared living spaces. Important: For safety reasons, residents are not permitted, and should not attempt, to clean residence hall windows from the outside. Exterior window cleaning is included as part of the University's routine building maintenance work.

Washers and dryers are located in each residence hall. Any questions or problems related to the operation of the laundry facilities should be directed to the residence hall Resource Center.

  • No kitchens in student rooms and suites
  • Minimum 10 meal plan always required

Residents may bring a small refrigerator (less than 5 cubic feet) and/or microwave, or arrange to rent them from information that will be mailed to new freshmen and transfers during the summer. Coordinate plans with roommates/suitemates to avoid duplication and space problems.

Elevators in the University's residence halls are routinely serviced and inspected. The University contracts with several companies to provide these services and to make any necessary repairs. If an elevator malfunctions while you are in it, press the alarm button and wait for instructions from the Department of Public Safety or the elevator repair service. They will be contacted immediately when a problem has been reported. Do NOT try to pry open the elevator doors or crawl out of the elevator. If you notice any irregularity in the operation of an elevator, report it immediately to the residence hall Resource Center. Service elevators should be operated only by authorized employees.

Report maintenance concerns to the NYU Client Services Center by filling in a work order form, which can be found at http://www.nyu.edu/fcm/workrequestform/ . In addition, you may email the Client Services Center at contactcsc@nyu.edu or you may call the CSC at 212-998-1001. The Client Services Center is open Mon - Fri 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sat - Sun 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Except University Holidays). Service requests should be reported at the first sign of a problem. If there is damage in your room, do not repair it yourself. Skilled repair personnel will fix it for you. Preventative maintenance and routine repairs are done without charge, though you will be billed for any damage caused by your negligence or actions. Emergency repairs include major leaks and flooding, inoperative door locks, and any problem that endangers safety or property. In case of an emergency, contact the reception desk or any member of the residence hall staff immediately.

Dining hall in the residence hall. Closed during Summer 2012.

Your telephone number is included with your room assignment, and the telephone service is available when you check in. There is one telephone jack per person sharing one telephone line in each bedroom. Residents provide their own telephones.

Residents provide their own computers with Ethernet cards, cables, and software.

NYURoam Wireless Network

NYURoam wireless service is now available throughout the residence hall. If you need assistance accessing the network you can go to http://www.nyu.edu/its/wireless/configure for setup instructions or you can speak to an ITS Client Services representative at 212-998-3333.

  • All residents must present their NYU ID cards upon entry.
  • All guests must be signed in and out by their resident host and leave picture ID at the guard station.

Keys to rooms and suites are issued to each resident during the check-in process. These keys must be returned when checking out of the residence hall. Residents will be charged to replace lost room keys and to install matching locks. Residents are expected to carry room keys at all times. Room keys are not to be duplicated outside the University.

Students are not permitted to paint their rooms. Individual rooms are painted by the Facilities Department on a rotating basis. If a room is to be painted while occupied, the resident will be notified in advance. Lofts or other structural modifications to an assigned residence hall space are prohibited.

Storage

Storage space in student rooms is limited (usually just a small closet, dresser, and under bed space), so don't overdo, and coordinate bringing large items with your roommates where possible. There is no storage space outside of student rooms during the year for suitcases, trunks, or boxes.

Furnishings

Each room is furnished with a twin bed, desk, desk chair, and storage space for clothing for each student. Personal furniture may not be added. If a student requests or requires special furniture to accommodate a disability, students should be in touch with the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities. Medical documentation is required to support the request.
