Honorary Degrees & Speakers

NYU is pleased to announce the recipients of honorary degrees at this year’s Commencement.

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws and will speak on behalf of the honorary degree recipients. Honorary degrees will also be bestowed upon Jean Liu, President of Didi Chuxing; Martine Rothblatt, Chair and CEO of United Therapeutics; Bryan Stevenson, NYU Law Professor and Founder of Equal Justice Initiative; and NASA’s Voyager Mission team members John Casani, Suzanne Dodd, and Edward Stone.

At a pre-Commencement event, the Albert Gallatin Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Society will be presented to Howard M. Meyers, Chairman of Quexco Incorporated. The Lewis Rudin Award for Exemplary Service to New York City will be presented to Alan H. Fishman, chairman of Ladder Capital and chairman of the Brooklyn Community Foundation.

Last Year's Honorees

In 2017, the honorary degree recipients at the All-University Commencement were Thomas R. Frieden, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly, Melissa V. Harris-Perry, Jean-Marie Lehn, Senator Barbara A. Mikulski, and Pharrell Williams, who spoke on behalf of all the honorary degree recipients. Award recipients honored at an earlier date included Anthony Welters, Carl Weisbrod, and Rima Al Mokarrab.
