Bobst Library Laptop Computer Services

Connect your own laptop to NYU-NET at Bobst

NYU students currently enrolled in degree programs and NYU faculty may borrow a laptop computer at no charge from the Electronic Resources Center (ERC) on the B-Level of Bobst Library. Laptops can be used in the following Bobst Library locations, where specially equipped carrels have been set aside for their use.

Laptops will be loaned only during ERC hours. End-of-day loans must be returned 1 hour before the ERC closes.

Checkout

Laptops must be checked out in person. No reservations will be taken. Borrowers will be required to leave their current NYU picture ID with the ERC. Laptops will be loaned only to those with a current NYU picture ID.

Late Fines

Laptops not returned within the 3-hour time-limit will be subject to a fine of $30 per hour. These fines apply to students and faculty. ERC staff will check the laptop to see that everything is in good working order before returning NYU ID to borrower.

Hardware

Macintosh Powerbooks and IBM-compatible laptops are available. Each is equipped with one 3.5" floppy drive and connections to NYU-NET. All files must be saved on 3.5" floppy disks. Disks are available for sale in the ERC. Printing is available in the ERC for a fee.

Software

For Macintosh and Windows 2000: MS Word, MS Excel, Powerpoint
For Windows 2000 only: WordPerfect, ProCite 5.0

For networks (both platforms): Netscape Navigator, MS Internet Explorer, ftp, telnet. Network access for e-mail and the Internet is available only to those with NYU NetIDs.. NYU NetIDs are issued to all NYU students and faculty. The ERC does not issue NetIDs. To activate your NYU NetID, go to http://start.nyu.edu and follow the instructions.

Technical Assistance

It is assumed that the borrower is familiar with Macintosh or Microsoft Windows 2000 operating systems. Help sheets are available for getting started with the software programs, and computer hookups. Limited numbers of manuals for the software are available in the ERC for in-house use on the B-level of Bobst. Instructions are also posted in the specially equipped carrels on the B-level. Staff is available to answer questions at the Service Desk in ERC, but cannot provide support to users in carrels.
