100 Main entry (personal name) - Use is limited in videorecordings to filmed lectures
(lecturer is main entry) or to short films or items which fall into the category of "video art"
(the filmmaker is solely responsible for the content; no other credits given). In filmed operas,
the composer is sometimes made the main entry; usually this has been changed to a 600
and/or 700, and the film title in 245 becomes the main entry.
245 Title - The GMD must always be in brackets after $h [videorecording].
246 Added titles and parallel titles (original titles of foreign films mostly) - usually 246 3B;
246 31 for parallel titles. All such titles should be traced. 740 added title fields should only
be used for titles of analytics; other added entries for titles should be moved from 740 to 246,
as necessary.
250 Edition statement - Rare. Retain if there is one. Example: Special collectors ed.
260 Publication info - The geographical info in $a should be complete, e.g. New York, N.Y.;
Los Angeles, Calif. $a and $b are repeatable to indicate distributors in addition to
manufacturers or producers of an item. In $c, the addition of a lower-case "c" for copyright is
frequently necessary.
300 Physical description - There should always be a time designation in $a, e.g. 60 min.; ca.
45 min. Any "VHS" designation in 300 should be deleted and moved to a 538 note. In $b if
the film is not entirely in color, an appropriate phrase should be added, e.g. "with b&w
sequences." $c should be 1/2 in. $e (preceded by +) with descriptive info should be added if
there is an accompanying booklet, e.g. +$e 1 booklet (26 p. ; 21 cm.)
440 (or 490/8XX) Series statement - All series should be traced if possible. Search them in
the authority files or consult the Audiovisual Cataloger or Head of Original Cataloging. Any
film that requires a 490/8XX combination should be verified with a librarian (happens rarely).
5XX Notes (generally in the following order)
500 Form notes - e.g. Documentary; Biographical documentary; Animated film; Opera in
three acts. These designations should also be reflected in appropriate subject headings, e.g.
650 B0 Documentary films; 650 B0 Biographical films; 650 B0 Short films (limited to filmed
fiction of less than an hour's duration); 650 B0 Animated films; 650 B0 Operas; etc.
546 Language notes - e.g. Sung in Italian, with subtitles in English; In Spanish and English,
with English subtitles and voiceovers; In German (no subtitles); In Swahili with voiceovers
and narration in English.
500 History notes - e.g. Originally produced as a motion picture in 1982; Originally
produced and copyrighted in 1939; Videocasette release of a 1963 film.
500 Title variation - All variations should be traced in 246 (246 may also be used for note
with caption in $i). e.g. Title on container: ....; Also issued with the title: ....
538 System details note - Text of note is "VHS"; note should always be 538. Delete the
word "format" if it follows VHS.
518 Date/time and place of an event note - e.g. Filmed on location in Kenya in 1958;
Lecture filmed in New York City on Feb. 15, 1996.
508 Creation/production credits notes - States the credits for persons or organizations, other
than members of the cast, who have participated in the artistic or technical production of the
work (should include the narrator which formerly went in 511 3B field which is now
obsolete). For feature films, include: director(s), producer(s), writer(s) of screenplay,
director(s) of photography, editor(s), costume designer(s) (for historical costume dramas). For
documentary films, include: director(s), producer(s), director(s) of photography, editor(s),
researcher(s). These names may be taken from containers, other info, or a quick look at
opening or closing frames of the film itself.
511 Participant or performer note - 0B for participants; 1B for cast members - Minimum of
four names, including especially well-known actors, actresses, dancers, artists, singers, etc. If
more names appear on copy, do not delete them, but all personal and corporate names given
on the copy should be given an added entry.
Other notes (not in a set order; use quotes for material quoted from container, etc.) -

504 - Bibliography included in accompanying booklet.
500 - Includes animated sequences. (Line 13 in 008 will be "c")
500 - "FFH 3021." (i.e. publisher numbers or dealer's catalog numbers given on container)
500 - "Based on the novel by Gore Vidal." (This requires a 650 B0 for Film adaptations and added author/title entry for original work.)
500 - Closed captioned for the hearing impaired. (This is frequently indicated on the container with "CC" in a box. This requires a 650 B0 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.)

520 Summary note - All records should have a 520. If 520 is present, text should be free of
typos, misspellings, and should be clear. If a 520 is not present and there is no summary
description available on the box, the Audiovisual Cataloger will devise a summary note.
505 Contents note - Retain if given; add if not too lengthy.
600, 610/611, 650 Subject headings - Generally retain subject headings and brought up-to-date if necessary. Assignment of additional headings will be done by the Audiovisual Cataloger.
700, 710 Added entries - Generally retain the headings given. All personal and corporate names given in the description should have an added entry. All names must be verified in the authority file.
730 Uniform title added entry - Generally retain. Usually appears in conjunction with a 5XX note like "Originally broadcast as a segment of the television program ..."
740 02 - Added entry for analyzed parts.
