Supplement and Index Treatment of Serials for
ADVANCE 6.8

Adding Supplements and Indexes, that DO NOT require their own Type of Holding:

Example as seen in :
Telephony
Risk

Do not create a TOH or a check-in box for the Supplements.
Instead, when checking in Add the notation as follows after the last enumeration

(This will represent the level 3 enumeration correctly.)
example: no.4 + "suppl."

SUPPLEMENT(S):
Suppl. is always singular. It does not matter if there are more than one supplements.

During CHECKIN retrieve the item the suppl. came with. In the enumeration, at the issue number level, add ("suppl.") after the number :

type in a space, + sign, space, open quotation, suppl., close quotation, space.

      EXAMPLE:

        (space) +(space)"suppl."(space)

INDEX:
The same is to be done with an index that does not have a separate bibliographic entity.

type in a space, + sign, space, open quotation, index, close quotation, space.

      EXAMPLE:

        (space) +(space)"index"(space)

If a part was incorrectly added in the past, DELETE these items - as it creates "UNKNOWN" objects: it is not needed, it creates a chaotic binding scenario, and incorrect OPAC entry.

(see page 11 of NISO): This indicates that the opening quotation marks is always preceded by a blank; the closing quotation mark is always followed by a blank.

Also see page 2 (statement 1.2.8) and page 6 of NISO for definition of index.

Remember we add an additional Index PART or Supplement PART only in cases of a multi year index or supplements such as Proceedings, etc. This should be done on the judgement of receiving Supervisor who will defer to Serials Cataloger.

Usually checking pagination and the bibliographic record will assist in determining how to handle index and supplements.
