Cataloging Procedures - Provenance

PROVENANCE ("FORMER OWNER") NOTES AND ACCESS POINTS FOR BOOKS IN BOBST STACKS

Special collections such as Fales routinely give copy-specific notes and access points regarding provenance in records for items in their collection. Occasionally, items in the stacks come from collections where we similarly want to provide access to the collection in the opac. Major examples include the Library of the Research Institute for the Study of Man (RISM) and more than a thousand titles from Ubu Repertory Theater.

A note should be added to the record to indicate that the item is from the relevant collection. If the item is for the stacks, such a note should be at the item level. If the item is in a special collection, it should follow the guidelines for notes in special collections, usually 500 with $5 NNU.

An access point (tagged 796 if personal name or 797 if corporate name) should be made in a consistent form with $e former owner. The heading should match LC/NAF if there is an established form. If there is no established form, match BobCat if there is a form there. Use hotkey to assure consistency.
