Advance status for partially cataloged items

When a cataloger starts cataloging a book and cannot finish, we want to prevent such a record from going to Marcadia or to RLIN by having a misleading status and/or encoding level in Advance. Any bibliographic record which is filed in the Cataloguing Module will go to RLIN. Any bibliographic record in "In processing" status (codes 400, 1201, 1203, 105) will be sent to RLIN for searching via Marcadia. If you are working on a record, we want to keep it out of the Marcadia stream. If the book is being cataloged but the record is incomplete, we want the RLIN-loaded record to represent its completeness accurately.

A record in the Workfile will not be sent to either the Marcadia or RLIN load stream. Since they are not available to BobCat users and since the interaction of the databases can be clumsy, the use of the Workfile is not encouraged for records that are moving toward completion or that are worthy of being seen by the user. It will, however, continue to be where PUT and XPOrted records are found.

If you start a book and cannot complete it in a timely manner (within one workday, more or less), but have done enough work that you don't want to Exit, please follow these guidelines:

The Status on the Item record should be set to "In Cataloguing" which is code 450. This will prevent the record from going into the Marcadia stream (eligibility for Marcadia: codes 400, 1201, 1203, 105). This should be used for all records which will be sitting at your desk for more than a day or so, or which will be given to another cataloger for completion, or which will be placed on the call number assignment, etc. shelf.

The Encoding Level in the Leader should be set to "5" (preliminary) while the record is in progress. When completed, the EL should be blank for full-level, or another code if not full-level cataloging.
