Parsons books with supplementary media

Books with supplementary media (diskettes, CD-ROMs, cassettes) in the Parsons collection are, for the most part, integrated into the regular circulating collection. In the manner specified below, the book and the non-book item(s) each receive individual item records and barcodes as well as distinct "collection" and "circ. codes". To distinguish the item records, a suffix is added to the call number of the non-book item.

The book will be handled as follows:

  • Collection - blank (unless otherwise indicated, e.g., Reference)
  • Circ. code - PARM (2 week loan) or, e.g., PARRF
  • Labelling - no call number prefix (unless the item is a reference book, in that case the Collection code of "Reference" will automatically appear on the label format but will be abbreviated to "REF." for the prefix)

The supplementary media will be handled as follows:

  • Collection - Audiovisual
  • Circ. code - PARM For diskettes there will usually be 2 copies, the original plus a backup copy. Parsons will be retaining the original diskette as a non-circulating copy and they will circulate the backup copy for 1 day.
The circ. codes will be assigned as follows:
    c.1 - (original disk) - PARM (non-circ.)
    c.2 - (backup copy) - PARAV (1 day loan)
  • Call no. suffix - "disk" or "CD-ROM" or "cassette" will appear in the first column of the "Volume/Part #" field on the item record (see lcn-11299536)
  • Labelling - "Audiovisual" will appear as the Collection code on the labels as a prefix to the call number. The suffix "disk" or "CD-ROM" or "cassette" will print on the labels from the "Volume/Part #" section of the pieces record. (for an example see lcn-11056478) Barcodes may be affixed to the outside front cover of the jewel case, top center. Labels may be affixed to the outside front cover of the jewel case, lower left corner.

(NOTE: if more than one supplementary media item is included, for example, a work about Philip Glass which includes a book and 2 sound cassettes, make separate item records for each item. (please consult lcn-11056478)
