Procedures for
Parsons CD-ROMs

Scope: CD-ROMs which are not supplements to printed materials. This document summarizes decisions communicated from Parsons via e-mail in December 1995 and in May 1997.

I. CD-ROMs will be cataloged as computer files or interactive multimedia, in the computer files (CF) format. CD-ROM serials will be cataloged as serials in the (CF) format. To be cataloged as interactive multimedia the item must meet the definition of interactive multimedia:
"Media residing in one or more physical carriers ... or on computer networks [which exhibits] both of these characteristics: (1) user-controlled, nonlinear navigation using computer technology; and (2) the combination of two or more media (audio, text, graphics, images, animation, and video) that the user manipulates to control the order and/or nature of the presentation." (Guidelines for bibliographic description of interactive multimedia, 1994, p. 1)

II. CD-ROMs receive LC classification.

III. The word "CD-ROM" is input in the Volume\Part# field, in the 1st column, of the Holdings Display and will appear after the call number.

IV. The Collection code for CD-ROMs is "Audiovisual". This collection code is used as the prefix on the spine labels. If necessary, for labelling purposes, this may be hyphenated as follows:
Audio-
visual

V. The Circulation code for CD-ROMs is "PARM".

VI. The barcode is affixed to the outside front cover of the jewel case, top center, as if the jewel case were a book cover.

VII. The spine label is affixed to the outside front cover of the jewel case, lower left corner.
