Government Documents

U.S. Government Documents arrive monthly in Cataloging from the Documents librarian in REF6. An average of 25 titles are sent for cataloging each month, however, the number will not exceed 40 titles in any given month. The Documents staff will flag each item with a green flag which will indicate the following:
     binding decision
     location (BMAIN or BRF6U)
     classification scheme (LC or SuDocs)

These materials are delivered to the Grade 8 staff person responsible for their processing (currently Patrick Desmangles). All items have the SuDocs classification number written on a label in the top left-hand corner of the item. It is also pencilled on the t.p. verso by Documents staff exactly as it is to be formatted in the Holdings Display of the record. Also, all documents have stickers affixed to them which read "Ref.6/Docs". These stickers are affixed by Documents staff on Ref6.

Each item is searched and edited in a priority manner. Barcodes are assigned to all cataloged titles. Items classed in LC are fully labelled. Items classed in SuDocs are returned to the 6th floor Reference department without having additional labels typed.

Serials sent for cataloging are always directed to the Serials Cataloger's attention.

Binding of paperback materials is handled by the Documents Assistant on Ref6.

The classification number is noted on the item and also in line 6 of the Holdings Display as follows: DOCS PR 42.2:Su 8/3

In addition:
     Collection = REF6
     Prefix = USDocs
     Suffix = Non-circulating
     Circ Code = BRF6U

This Prefix and Circ Code were implemented in December 1998.

NOTE: the SuDocs classification number may be found in the 086 field of the MARC record.
